For many florists, entering a competition can feel daunting. But for those who’ve taken the leap, the rewards can be game-changing – both creatively and professionally.
We asked some of last year’s UK Florist of the Year finalists and winners what made them step into the spotlight and why they’d encourage you to do the same.
Here’s what they had to say:
“Floristry competitions have been a crucial part of my journey… Competing has not only helped me grow professionally but has also introduced me to a supportive and inspiring community of likeminded people.” — Mandy Bunnett, UKFOY 2024 Newcomer Finalist
“Starting in the florist industry can be daunting… Confidence is key, and for me, competitions were the best way to build it.” — Kirsty Noble, UKFOY Newcomer Winner 2024
“Entering competitions is a great way to enhance your knowledge and creativity… It builds confidence not only in floristry but as an overall person.” — Hannah Beckley, UKFOY Finalist 2024
Many of our past competitors have said that the UK Florist of the Year competition was the push they needed to raise their standards, test their skills and grow in confidence. Whether you’re just starting out in the industry or have years of experience under your belt, there’s a category for you:
UK Florist of the Year is open to florists with over 5 years of industry experience.
UK Florist of the Year: Newcomer is for florists with less than 5 years of experience.
You’ll begin your journey by taking part in one of the regional heats held at our HUB Meetings between April and June 2025. These heats are an amazing way to dip your toe into competitive floristry in a supportive environment surrounded by fellow professionals. You’ll bring a ready-made design from a specific brief, then enjoy the HUB event while judging takes place.
Finalists from each category will be invited to compete at FleurEx 2025, our biggest industry event of the year. Here, you’ll face a series of design challenges – from surprise makes to pre-planned pieces. It’s truly exciting, and a real celebration of floristry at its finest.
Joseph Massie, our reigning UK Florist of the Year, knows exactly what it takes. As someone who’s competed for years on the international stage, he describes the experience like unlocking a creative puzzle:
“Schedules sometimes feel like a cool puzzle to unlock… I enjoy the process of unlocking it, of creating the most beautiful thing I can imagine.”
Joseph also reminds florists that preparation is key:
“Give yourself more time than you think you’ll need. Start your preparations way before you need to have them ready… Be brave. Don’t be too hard on yourself.”
And Kirsty Noble, now running her own shop and building her brand as a designer, shares how competitions have helped her confidence and business growth:
“Competitions offer a rare space to push creative boundaries… The feedback you receive will stay with you throughout your career.”
Whether you walk away with a trophy or simply more experience, entering is a powerful way to challenge yourself, meet new florists, and strengthen your craft.
And you’re not on your own. The competitions are judged by the UK Floristry Judges Guild and everyone who takes part receives a participation certificate – a brilliant addition to your professional portfolio.
So, if you’ve been thinking about giving it a go, this is your sign.
